Waycross police now say the man officers killed Friday was threatening police with a weapon.
Jack Lamer Roberson, 43, was shot to death by police officers who were responding to an emergency call at his house on Reed Street in Waycross on Friday afternoon. Roberson lived there with his fiancée, daughter and mother.
Family members tell Action News they were all home Friday when someone called for an ambulance to treat Roberson’s diabetic condition.
But Waycross police now say the emergency call Friday was for a suicidal man. Roberson’s mother claimed all last weekend that her son had his arms raised when officers fired.
But Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner says Roberson’s arms were raised, but not in surrender. “He started toward them aggressively armed with two items used as weapons.” said Tanner. Police will not say what those items were.
Both officers fired and Roberson died at the scene.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
