Waycross arson becomes murder of fireman

firemanA City of Waycross Fire Department response turned into a Line of Duty Death Sunday, and that became a murder when the fire was ruled an arson which resulted in the death of Lt. David Jeff Little, 50.

The fire Department responded to a structure fire around 12:20 a.m. on Sunday on the 1000 block of Isabella Street in Waycross. The structure had been vacant for several years and no utilities were connected. The home was completely destroyed and has been ruled an arson. Under Georgia fire statutes this is now considered a murder case, according to spokesperson Glenn Allen of the Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.

While battling the blaze, Little got trapped inside the home. Other firefighters were able to pull him out of the home and administer CPR. Little was then transported to the Mayo Clinic Health System in Waycross where he was pronounced dead.

According to Chief David Eddins, Jeff’s loss hits deep into the heart and soul of the community and fire department.

Ralph T. Hudgens, Insurance of Safety and Fire Commissioner, has asked for the public’s assistance. An award of up to $10,000 has been issued. Anyone with information is asked to call 800.282.5804.

The Georgia State Fire Marshal, Waycross Police Department, and Waycross Fire Marshal have been working around the clock on this case.
