GBI investigating police-involved shooting death in Waycross

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is probing a fatal shooting in Waycross that involved city police officers and a male victim, said Russell Mansfield, special agent in charge of the agency’s Douglas office.

The shooting occurred about 4:30 p.m. inside a mobile home on Reed Street, Mansfield said.

He declined to provide the name of the dead man or say how many officers were involved beyond saying there were more than one.

“We were requested by the Waycross Police Department, by the chief [Tony Tanner], to investigate a police involved shooting in which the victim was deceased,’’ Mansfield said.

Agents were still in the mobile home at 11 p.m. collecting evidence, he said.

The dead man’s body was still inside the house but would be sent to a GBI crime lab for an autopsy, Mansfield said.

Mayor Clarence Billups said that two police officers were involved.
