Which is smarter — the Savannah-Chatham County school board or a box of rocks?
Be careful before you answer.
That’s because the school system is in the process of hiring a contract compliance officer, a full-time employee whose job is to make sure that some of the $350 million spent on school construction and renovation over the next several years goes to qualified minority- and women-owned businesses in the Savannah area.
Generally speaking, that’s a good thing.
Many taxpayers appreciate seeing their local tax dollars spent in the community, as opposed to being shipped off to Atlanta, Chicago or a foreign land like Southern California.
Except in this instance, one of the candidates in the running for this key job is Chatham County Commissioner Yusuf Shabazz. He’s the husband of Savannah City Alderwoman Estella Shabazz.
